SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind 13 kills from junior opposite Alaysia Brown, the ninth-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team claimed the championship of the USD Tournament with a 3-0 win over UC Santa Barbara Saturday evening at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the 25-15, 25-19, 25-19 win, the Toreros run their winning streak to six, as they improve to 7-1 overall. With the loss, the Gauchos fall to 3-6 overall.
Brown led all players with 13 kills on 26 swings, while only committing one error, to hit for a .423 clip. Sandra Lozic also had a good offensive match, as she recorded eight kills, while Chloe Ferrari was a perfect six kills on six swings, to hit for a 1.000 clip. C'era Oliveira led the defensive side of things with 14 digs, while Jianna Bonomi recorded 21 assists with 12 digs to post another double-double. As a team, USD hit for an impressive .382 clip.
In the first set, the Toreros and Gauchos were keeping things close in the early going, with USD leading from start to finish. Then with the score knotted at 4-all, a Ferrari kill sparked a 7-2 USD run to give San Diego all the momentum and an 11-6 lead. USD would then begin to slowly separate themselves even further from the Gauchos, and claimed the first set 25-15.
In the second frame, it was a much closer affair for a majority of the frame. With the Toreros leading 10-8, a Brown kill then sparked a 6-1 San Diego run to give USD a 16-9 lead, and all the momentum. San Diego never looked back, as they went on to claim a 25-19 win.
In the third and final frame, things were a lot closer throughout the set. The Gauchos managed to stay close to the Toreros throughout the set and pulled even with USD at 16-all on an Ali Barbeau kill. USD would the grab the next two points, forcing UCSB into their final timeout. The two teams then traded points over the next few possessions, before USD closed things out on a 4-0 run to complete the sweep with a 25-19 win.
San Diego returns to action on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. match against cross-town rival San Diego State University for their final non-conference match before West Coast Conference play begins Saturday at BYU. The USD and SDSU match will be played in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
