SAN DEIGO, Calif. - Behind a dominating performance from Chloe Ferrari and Katie Hoekman, the 17th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team picked up a 3-1 win over UC Santa Barbara Saturday evening in a non-conference match at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

With the 25-15, 21-25, 25-15, 25-22 win, the Toreros improve to 8-2, claim the championship of the USD tournament and they have run their winning streak to a season-high five. With the loss, the Gauchos fall to 7-7 on the season.

Ferrari completed a near perfect weekend, as she recorded 14 kills on 29 swings, and for a third consecutive match, she recorded no errors to hit for a .483 clip. For her efforts this weekend, Ferrari was named the Tournament's MVP. Hoekman led the Toreros in kills with 15, while hitting for a .345 clip en route to an All-Tournament selection. Rachel Alvey also had a great night, as she recorded 48 assist en route to an All-Tournament selection. Kandiss Anderson led the defensive effort, as she had 21 digs.

In the first set, The Toreros came out clicking on all cylinders, as a UCSB attack error sparked a 6-1 USD run to open the frame. The Toreros kept the pressure on the Gauchos, and eventually opened up an 11-5 advantage, which forced Santa Barbara into a timeout. After the stop in action, the Toreros continued to slowly pull ahead and eventually took an 11-point edge at 18-7 on a kill by Alvey. USD never looked back as they cruised their way to a 25-15 win.

In the second set, the Gauchos managed to take advantage of several USD miscues, and evened the match at one set apiece with a 25-22 win. The set was a nip and tuck affair, as both teams took their turn with the lead and neither team led by more than three. Then with the score tied at 20-all, the Gauchos managed to scratch out a 25-22 win.

In the third set, the Toreros found themselves back in control right out of the gates, as a UCSB attack error sparked a 7-2 run that was capped on a Ferrari kill to give USD a 7-2 lead, and forced the Gauchos into a timeout. USD continued to slowly pull ahead and after the Toreros took a 14-6 lead, UCSB again called a timeout. But this was too little too late, nothing was going to slowdown the Torero momentum, as they then cruised their way to a 25-15 win.

In the fourth and final set, UCSB managed to stand toe-to-toe with the nationally ranked Toreros, and with the score knotted at 11-all, the home team managed to inch forward and take a 16-12 lead, to gain a little breathing room. USD would then go on to build up a six-point lead at 22-16, and the Gauchos could not overcome this deficit, which allowed USD to go on and claim the match with a 25-22 win.

USD will return to action on Thursday at 7 p.m., as they open West Coast Conference play against the University of San Francisco inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
