SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The second-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team used a balanced offensive attack to cruise its way to a sweep of cross-town rival San Diego State University Tuesday evening at the Jenny Craig Pavilion in their final non-conference match of the regular-season.
With the 25-12, 25-20, 25-21 win, the Toreros improve to 8-1 overall and run their winning streak to seven matches. With the loss, the Aztecs fall to 5-5 overall.
The Toreros offense was paced by Sandra Lozic, who had nine kills, while also recording five digs and one solo block. Both Chloe Ferrari and Alaysia Brown recorded eight kills apiece, while Katie Hoekman recorded five kills. Jianna Bonomi recorded 19 assists, while C'era Oliveira recorded 15 digs. As a team, USD hit .229.
In the first set, a Ferrari kill sparked a 6-1 USD run right out of the gates. SDSU managed to close the gap down to three at 9-6 on a Summer Nash kill, but that is as close as they would get, as a Taylor Hollins kill sparked a 12-2 Torero run that would give USD a 21-8 lead, and the Toreros never looked back, as they cruised their way to a 25-12 win.
In the second frame, the Toreros again raced out to an early advantage, as they grabbed a 7-2 lead. USD would eventually build up a lead to as many as eight at 16-8 on a SDSU attack error. Then with the Toreros in full control at 21-13, The Aztecs put on a late 7-2 run, pulling back to within three at 23-20, but in the end, the Toreros held on to take the second set 25-21.
In the third set, the Aztecs made things interesting, as they grabbed the early momentum, and managed to keep to within just a few points of the Toreros. Then with SDSU leading 20-18, a Ferrari kill sparked a 7-1 Torero run to close out the set with a 25-21 win, completing the sweep.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday, as they travel to Provo, Utah to open West Coast Conference play against Brigham Young University. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. (PST), and will be aired live on BYUTV.
