SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Four different Toreros recorded double-digit kills highlighted by a season-high 14 from Sandra Lozic to help propel the 18th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team to a 3-1 win over Santa Clara University Saturday afternoon in a West Coast Conference match at the Leavey Center.
With the 20-25, 25-11, 25-17, 32-30 win, the Toreros improve to 10-2 overall, move to 2-0 in the WCC, and run their winning streak to seven. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 11-5 overall and 1-1 in the WCC.
Lozic led the team with 14 kills on 29 swings, while only committing four errors to hit for a .345 clip. Katie Hoekman recorded 12 kills on 22 swings, while committing a pair of errors to hit for a .455 clip, while also recording five blocks. Carrie Baird had 11 kills and Chloe Ferrari recorded 10 kills to round off the USD offense. Rachel Alvey recorded 52 assists and had seven digs in her return to the Bay Area, while both Kandiss Anderson and C'era Oliveira had 10 digs a piece. As a team, USD hit .315 for the match.
In the first set, the Broncos shocked USD by taking the frame 25-20. In the early going it was a back and forth affair. Then with the score knotted at 4-all, a SCU service error ignited a 6-1 run that was capped on a Katie Hoekman kill to give USD a 10-5 edge, and forcing the Broncos into a timeout. Out of the break, the Broncos caught fire as they went on a 6-1 run of their own to even the score up at 11-all. USD would grab the next two points, but SCU put together an 8-3 run to gab the momentum and take a 19-16 lead. USD could not overcome this deficit, as SCU held on to win the first set.
In the second set, San Diego rebounded with authority. USD led this frame from start to end, as a Hoekman and Alaysia Brown
block ignited an 8-4 run to open the set. USD never let its foot off the gas, as they then went on a 7-4 run to open up a 15-8 lead, and the Toreros never looked back as they cruised their way to a 25-11 victory to even the match at 1-1.
In the third set, USD continued to roll as they picked up a 25-17 win. This set was a close battle through most of the frame with USD holding onto the lead for a majority of the set. Then with the score knotted at 12-all, a SCU attack error ignited a 7-2 San Diego run that was capped on a Bronco service error to give USD all the momentum and a 19-14 lead. USD never looked back, as they eased their way to a 25-17 win.
In the fourth and final set, it was a barn burner, as this one went to a 32-20 win for the Toreros. USD got off to a great start, as a bad SCU set jump started a 4-0 Torero run out of the gates. USD would then go on to build up a 10-3 lead on a Lozic kill. The Broncos then slowly began to chip away at the lead and eventually pulled even with USD at 20-20. SCU would then go on to take set point at 24-23, but a Hoekman kill would even the score up at 24-all. SCU then had set point on five more occasions, and finally with USD trailing 30-29, a Brown kill ignited a 3-0 USD run to close things out and give USD the victory.
The Toreros will return to action on Thursday as they head up to Los Angeles to take on the Loyola Marymount Lions in a 7 p.m. WCC match.
