MALIBU, Calif. - Four different Toreros recorded double-digit kills to help the 15th-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team remain perfect in West Coast Conference play, as the Toreros picked up a thrilling 3-1 win over No. 23 Pepperdine University Saturday afternoon at the Firestone Fieldhouse.
With the 28-26, 25-22, 22-25, 25-20 win, the Toreros improve to 14-2 overall, move to 5-0 WCC and have now extended their winning streak to nine. With the loss, the Waves fall to 11-7 overall, and 1-4 in the WCC.
Chloe Ferrari led the team's offense, as the All-American recorded 16 kills, on 29 swings, while only committing one error to hit for a .518 clip. Sandra Lozic wasn't far behind, as she recorded 15 kills, while Carrie Baird recorded 14 kills and Katie Hoekman recorded 11 kills. Rachel Alvey recorded a season-high 60 assists in helping steer the USD offense to a .305 team attack percentage, and Kandiss Anderson led the team's defense as she had 28 digs.
In the first set, a Pepperdine attack error ignited a 7-2 San Diego run that was bookended on a Lozic kill, to give San Diego the early momentum. The Waves then regrouped and a Katie Messing kill jump started a 13-8 Pepperdine run that gave the home team a 15-13 edge and the momentum. A Ferrari kill then sparked a 5-2 USD run to give the Toreros back the lead at 18-17. The two teams then sea sawed back and forth a bit until USD took set point at 24-22 on a Alaysia Brown kill. But the Waves managed to go on a 3-0 run to take set point themselves. The two teams then went back and forth with each having set-point a few more times until a Brown and Hoekman block gave the Toreros the 28-26 win.
In the second set, it was a close nit battle in the early going. Then with the score knotted at 12-all, a Pepperdine attack error jump started a 4-0 USD run that was capped on a Lozic kill to give the Toreros a 16-12 lead and all the momentum. This four-point edge proved to be too much for the Waves to overcome, as USD held on to claim a 25-22 win, to go up in the match two-sets-to-none.
In the third set, the Waves grabbed the early momentum, as they raced out to a 6-3 lead. USD managed to stay close to the Waves throughout this set, and came to within two on a few occasions. But in the end, Pepperdine was able to avoid the sweep and force a fourth set with a 25-22 win.
In the fourth and final set, San Diego went right to work, as a Ferrari kill ignited a 4-2 run right out of the gates to give USD the early momentum. The Waves however, would then manage to tie things up at 4-all, and managed to keep things close for the next several volleys. Then with the score tied at 7-all, a Ferrari kill sparked a 6-2 San Diego run to give USD back the momentum and a 13-9 lead. The Waves would manage to come to within a few points on a couple of occasions, but USD would not surrender the lead, as they went on to claim set four by a final of 25-20.
The Toreros will return to action on Thursday as they return home to host Gonzaga University in a 7 p.m. WCC match inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
