Oct. 11, 2012
By defeating the Bulldogs 21-25, 25-10, 25-19, and 25-10, the Toreros remain undefeated in the WCC with a conference record of 7-0, and an overall record of 15-2. With the loss tonight, the Bulldogs are now 9-10 overall, with a 1-5 record in WCC play.
The Toreros were led tonight by sophomore outside hitter Sandra Lozic who had 15 kills and hit for a .379 clip. Chloe Ferrari and Katie Hoekman both recorded double digit kills as well, as Ferrari had 12, and Hoekman had 11, and Alaysia Brown recorded eight kills on an impressive .400 clip tonight. Rachel Alvey recorded another double-double with 38 assists and 13 digs, while Kandiss Anderson led the defense with 23 digs.
The first set started off back and forth between the Toreros and the Bulldogs, but three successive kills by Ferrari gave the Toreros an early lead of 8-6. Gonzaga bounced back and fought back and forth with the Toreros, until a service ace by Savannah Blinn gave them a 16-14 lead, forcing a USD timeout. The Bulldogs kept the slim margin for the rest of the set, and two more kills by Blinn gave Gonzaga a 25-21 win in the first set.
The Toreros stormed out to an early lead in the second set, with a kill by Lozic giving them an 8-3 lead, forcing a Gonzaga timeout. The Toreros kept their foot on the gas pedal, as a solo block by Shelby Staab caused another Gonzaga timeout with the score 14-5, as the Toreros continued onto a 9-0 run behind the serving of Amber Tatsch and put the game out of reach. The final score of the set was 25-10, as the Toreros out hit the Bulldogs .333 to .000.
The third set started out exactly like the second set, with the Toreros gaining an early 8-3 lead with a block by Ferrari and Staab, causing a Gonzaga timeout. Later in the set, the Toreros went on another run behind the serving of Tatsch, giving the Toreros an 18-5 lead. With the game seemingly already won by the Toreros, the Bulldogs immediately responded with a 4-0 run of their own forcing a San Diego timeout. The Toreros looked to regroup, but the Bulldogs kept playing well as they extended their run to a 10-0 run behind crucial blocks by Meredith Crenshaw and Lauren Joseph. A kill by Chloe Ferrari halted the run by the Bulldogs, however Gonzaga immediately responded with two more points behind a block and kill by Blinn forcing a San Diego timeout at the score of 19-18 in favor of USD. The Toreros would not be upset in this set however, as a late 4-0 run by the Toreros powered by two Brown kills gave the Toreros a 25-19 win.
Once again the Toreros came out strong in the fourth and final set, jumping out to an early 6-1 lead behind two Lozic kills. The Toreros kept up their strong plays as two kills by Staab forced a Bulldogs timeout at 14-6. The Bulldogs could not cut the lead as a late 5-0 run led by two Tatsch kills gave the Toreros a win of 25-10 win, sealing another WCC win for the Toreros.
