SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The eighth-ranked University of San Diego women's volleyball team cruised its way to a 3-0 win over Pepperdine University Wednesday evening in a West Coast Conference match at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
With the 25-19, 30-28, 25-16 win, the Toreros improve to 18-3 overall, move to 10-2 in the WCC, and have now extended their winning streak to a season-high nine matches. With the loss, the Waves fall to 11-9 overall, and 5-7 in the WCC.
Katie Hoekman led all players with 12 kills on 21 attempts, while only committing one error to hit for a .524 clip. Hoekman also recorded four blocks. Alaysia Brown was the second player in double digit kills with 11, while hitting for a .280 clip. Rachel Alvey had all-around great match, as she recorded 22 assists, had four blocks and four kills. C'era Oliveira led the defense with 20 digs, and as a team, USD hit .300.
In the first set, the Toreros took control right from the get-go, as a Sandra Lozic kill sparked a 9-4 run to give the Toreros the early momentum, and forcing the Waves into a timeout. Out of the break, USD continued to control things, and eventually took a 19-11 lead, to again force the visitors into a timeout. Out of the break, USD cruised its way to a 25-19 win.
In the second set, it was back and forth right out of the gates. Then with the score knotted at 4-all, a Brown kill sparked a 7-2 Toreros run to give USD the momentum and a 11-7 lead, forcing the visitors in to a timeout. Out of the break, Pepperdine went on a 4-1 run to pull to within two at 12-10, forcing USD into a timeout. The two teams then battled back and forth with both teams taking their turn with the lead and neither team leading by more than three. The Toreros then took set-point at 24-23, but the Waves grabbed the next two points, only to see USD do the exact same thing. USD would hold set-point on four more times before a Brown kill finally gave SD a 30-28 win to go into the break up two-sets-to-none.
In the third and final set, it was all Toreros. The home team jumped out to a 12-8 lead, forcing the Waves into a timeout. Pepperdine just could not get back on track, as USD continued to pull ahead, and led by as many as 10, before settling for the 25-16 win to complete the sweep.
The Toreros will return to action on Saturday, as they travel to Los Angeles to take on the Loyola Marymount Lions at 1 p.m.
