SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Head women's volleyball coach Jennifer Petrie has released the University of San Diego's 2014 schedule, which is highlighted by a home showdown with perennial power Stanford, and six other matches against NCAA Tournament participants from a year ago. Season tickets for all USD volleyball games are now on sale. Contact the ticket office at 619-260-7550 or by clicking here.
"The teams on our preseason schedule are competitive, challenging and mostly out of region,” stated Petrie. “The level of play will push us to perform early in the year, preparing us for another West Coast Conference Championship run.”
The season kicks off in West Lafayette, Indiana with a match-up against NCAA Tournament participant Louisiana State University on Friday, August 29, to open the Mortar Board Premier before taking on NCAA Elite 8 participant and host Purdue University in the premier match of the tournament later that evening. USD will only have one match on Saturday, and that will be against South Florida.
USD then gets to return to San Diego and open up the home portion of their schedule with the USD Tournament. USD will begin the tournament hosting Ivy League member Brown on Friday Sept. 5 at 2 p.m., and will then host Villanova that evening in the marque match-up at 7 p.m. The tournament will then come to a close on Saturday Sept. 6, with a 7 p.m. showdown against Northwestern.
The preseason schedule then continues with a tournament up in Los Angeles at the Galen Center, hosted by USC. The Toreros will take on a pair of NCAA Tournament participants in Texas A&M and Florida on Sept. 11 and 12th.
The Toreros then return to San Diego to take on cross-town rival San Diego State on Sept. 16 at SDSU. The Toreros will then return to the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion to host the USD Invitational, closing out the non-conference portion of their schedule. In this Tournament, USD hosts perennial power and Elite 8 participant Stanford on Sept. 18 at 7:30 p.m. The very next day, USD will take on Eastern Washington and NCAA Tournament participant Cal State Northridge.
The ever so strong West Coast Conference play begins on Sept. 25, as USD remains home to begin its WCC title defense against the University of Portland at 7 p.m. The Toreros will then have home and home matches with the rest of the conference, highlighted by home showdowns with Gonzaga (Sep. 27), Santa Clara (Oct. 2), San Francisco (Oct. 4), Sweet 16 participant BYU (Oct. 17), and Pepperdine (Oct. 23).
After opening WCC play with six of the first eight matches at home, USD will have to battle through a tough four-week road stretch, only playing three matches at home against Loyola Marymount (Oct. 25), Pacific (Nov. 6) and Saint Mary’s (Nov. 8). The Toreros will then have their final four WCC matches away from the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
