SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Head women's volleyball coach Jennifer Petrie has released the University of San Diego's 2013 schedule, which is highlighted by a showdown with the defending national champion Texas Longhorns, and seven other matches against NCAA Tournament participants from a year ago.
"The players and the coaches are very excited about this year’s challenging schedule,” stated Petrie. “It is always fun to open the season in Hawaii, in front of an excellent crowd competing against both Hawaii and the defending National Champions of the University of Texas. We will play host to great teams such as USC, UC Santa Barbara and San Diego State.”
The Toreros will open the season with no easy task, as they say aloha to the mainland, and head to the Hawaiian Islands. The Toreros will compete in the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational, hosted by the University of Hawaii. USD will open the season on Aug. 30 with a 2 p.m. match against UTEP. The Toreros will then take on the defending national champion Texas Longhorns on Aug. 31st in a 3 p.m. match, and will conclude opening weekend with a 2 p.m. match against Hawaii.
The Toreros will then remain on the road, as they head to Ames, Iowa to compete in the Iowa State Challenge from Sept. 6-7. On Sept. 6, San Diego take on the host Iowa State Cyclones in a 4:30 p.m. match, before closing out the tournament on Sept. 7 with a 10 a.m. showdown against Illinois.
San Diego then finally comes home and begins their home schedule by hosting the annual USD Tournament from Sept. 13-14 inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion. This tournament will feature the likes of the USC Trojans, the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos and the Eastern Washington Eagles. USD will open their home schedule on Sept. 13 with a 7:30 p.m. match against the Women of Troy. USD will then play two matches on Saturday, first at 10 a.m. against Eastern Washington, then they play a nightcap against UCSB at 7:30 p.m.
After the Toreros take on cross-town rival San Diego State on Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. inside of the Jenny Craig Pavilion, the ever so strong West Coast Conference play begins on Sept. 20, as USD hits the road to take on the 2012 Co-WCC champions BYU Cougars at 6 p.m. The Toreros will then have home and home matches with the rest of the conference, highlighted by home showdowns with the NCAA participants Saint Mary’s (Sep. 28), Loyola Marymount (Oct. 3), and Santa Clara (Oct. 12). The Toreros will also welcome WCC new-comer, University of the Pacific, to town on Sept. 26.
After opening WCC play with five of the first seven matches at home, USD will have to battle through a tough four-week road stretch, only playing one match at home against Pepperdine on Oct. 30 at 5 p.m. But the Toreros will then close out the regular-season with three consecutive home matches, including the regular-season finale against BYU, which could be a match to determine the WCC championship.
“With a strong returning squad, we are ready for the competitive schedule and we are anxious to get the season started,” said Petrie.
