Volleyball Practice Begins Aug. 10

PRACTICE BEGINS: The University of San Diego women's volleyball team will open practice on Saturday at 9 a.m. inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.  The 2013 Toreros, defending West Coast Conference Co-Champions, will not only be looking to win its second consecutive WCC championship, and third in the last four years, but to once again return to the NCAA Tournament and advance further than ever before.

ALL-WCC PERFORMERS RETURN: San Diego's roster, which is laden with veteran leadership, is highlighted by four All-WCC performers returning from a year ago.    Highlighting this bunch are a pair of first-team All-WCC selections in Katie Hoekman and Chloe Ferrari.  Also returning for USD is All-WCC honorable mentions honorees Rachel Alvey and Alaysia Brown

-  Hoekman paced the Torero offense this past season, with 294 kills (2.65 kps), while hitting for an impressive .389 clip, and she led the team in blocks with 123, 21 of which were solo. 

-  Ferrari finished the season with 237 kills (2.69 kps), while hitting for a .367 clip. Ferrari also was third on the team in blocks with 51, 12 of which were solo blocks.

-  Alvey led the team with 1,042 assists, added in 273 digs, while also helping lead the USD hitters to a .234 team attack percentage.

-  Brown had a break-out type season for the Toreros, as she burst onto the scene and finished the regular-season with the second most kills (280), and second most blocks (71).

OFFENSE, OFFENSE, OFFENSE: San Diego has the pleasure of returning four of the top five leaders in kills from last season's 21-7 NCAA Tournament team.  Katie Hoekman (294 kills), Alaysia Brown (280 kills), Sandra Lozic (247 kills) and Chloe Ferrari (237 kills) will return this year.  Senior setter Rachel Alvey and junior setter Jianna Bonomi will have plenty of options to turn to, in distributing the ball. 


 

 

THE SCHEDULE: A showdown with the defending national champion Texas Longhorns, as well as seven other matches against NCAA Tournament participants from a year ago, highlight San Diego's 2013 schedule.  USD will be featured on their home floor of the Jenny Craig Pavilion 10 times, highlighted by showdowns with the NCAA Elite Eight participant USC Trojans, NCAA Sweet 16 participant BYU, cross-town rival San Diego State, as well as WCC foes Pepperdine, Saint Mary's, Gonzaga, Portland, Pacific, San Francisco, Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara.  USD's road schedule features showdowns with perennial powers Hawaii ((9-1), Texas (8-31), as well as Iowa State (9-6).

THE COACH: Jennifer Petrie has done an outstanding job directing the fortunes of San Diego volleyball since taking over as the Toreros head coach in 1999. Honored as the 2004, 2008 and 2010 West Coast Conference Coach of the Year, Petrie continues to establish the University of San Diego as one of the top volleyball programs in the nation. In 12 complete seasons as head coach, Petrie has led San Diego to 10 appearances in the NCAA Tournament (1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010 & 2012).
