Toreros Tabbed Second in Preseason WCC Coaches Poll

SAN BRUNO, Calif. --- The defending West Coast Conference Co-Champion University of San Diego women's volleyball team was picked to finish second in a preseason WCC Coaches poll.  BYU was chosen to win the 2013 WCC title after capturing five of the nine possible first place votes and 74 points overall. Just one point shy of the Cougars, USD tallied 73 points and three of the remaining first place votes. The Cougars and Toreros tied for first place in last year's regular season.

Saint Mary's College earned 69 points and two first place votes, while Pepperdine was picked fourth with 58 points. Loyola Marymount University earned 43 points and Santa Clara University tallied 42 points to finish fifth and sixth, respectively. Newcomer University of the Pacific earned 33 points to finish seventh, while the University of San Francisco (32 points), Gonzaga University (16 points) and the University of Portland (10 points) rounded out the preseason poll.

At least one player from eight of the 10 WCC teams is represented on the preseason All-WCC team with the Gaels and Toreros having two players selected to the squad. The 2013 WCC season begins on Friday, August 30 with eight teams set for non-conference action. Leading up to Opening Day, the West Coast Conference will host a Google+ Hangout previewing the 2013 WCC women's volleyball season. Fans will be able to ask questions of WCC student-athletes and watch the event live on YouTube.

The Toreros were represented on the preseason All-WCC team by senior middle hitter Chloe Ferrari and Katie Hoekman.  finished the season with 237 kills (2.69 kps), while hitting for a .367 clip. Ferrari also was third on the team in blocks with 51, 12 of which were solo blocks. In WCC action, Ferrari recorded 142 kills, while hitting at a .340 clip, and she recorded 30 blocks. Ferrari was tabbed the Tournament MVP for the USD Tournament back in September. Hoekman, meanwhile, paced the Torero offense this past season, with 294 kills (2.65 kps), while hitting for an impressive .389 clip, and she led the team in blocks with 123, 21 of which were solo.
