SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's volleyball team has been ranked No. 20 in the AVCA preseason top-25 poll, the publication announced Monday afternoon.

San Diego, the defending West Coast Conference champions, are the only WCC team ranked in the preseason top-25 with both Pepperdine and Saint Mary's receiving votes in the preseason poll. The Toreros are coming off a season in which they posted a 24-6 overall record and a 13-1 mark in the WCC. With the 13-1 record, USD claimed its fourth WCC championship in the past five years and they advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with an impressive sweep of Long Beach State, before falling to USC in the second round, 3-1. This marked the Toreros' 14th trip to the NCAA tournament in program history, and their 10th trip in the last 11 years.

Sophomore middle Chloe Ferrari, the 2010 WCC Freshman of the Year and an AVCA All-Pacific Region selection, is expected to anchor down the Torero offense after an impressive freshman campaign. In 2010, Ferrari set a USD single-season record for hitting percentage (.403), while finishing the year ranked 12th in the nation in hitting percentage. Ferrari led the Toreros with 16 kills in their season-ending loss to No. 6 USC in the second of the NCAA tournament and she had 563 total kills for the season to go along with a team-leading 69 blocks. USD also welcomes back WCC All-Freshman team selection in libero C'era Oliveira, who is expected to give USD an added bonus on the defensive side of things. Last season, Oliveira had a break-out freshman campaign as she won the starting libero job in the summer and kept it all season long as one of USD's primary passers and key defensive specialist. Oliviera led the Toreros with 343 digs on the season, 3.65 digs-per-set, en route to her All-WCC freshman team selection.

Ferrari, Oliveira and the rest of the Toreros will open the 2011 season on Aug. 26, as they take on Long Island University in a 5 p.m. non-conference match at the Fresno State Tournament.
