SAN DIEGO, Calif. -The University of San Diego women's volleyball team dropped one spot to No. 20 in the latest AVCA top-25 poll after posting a 2-1 record in the opening weekend of action for 2012.
This past week, USD picked up a pair of 3-0 wins over Cal Poly and LSU, before falling in a hard fought 3-0 decision to No. 2 Texas. In Friday's sweep over Cal Poly, Amber Tatsch led all players with 13 kills on 24 swings, while committing no errors to hit for a .542 clip. Katie Hoekman recorded 10 kills on 17 swings, while only committing one error to hit for a .529 clip. Junior setter Rachel Alvey led the team with 26 assists, while helping steer the Torero offense to a .439 team attack percentage. Senior libero Kandiss Andersonled the defensive end with nine digs.
In Saturday's sweep over LSU, Alaysia Brown paced the Toreros offense with a career-high 10 kills on 17 swings, while only committing two errors, to hit for a .471 clip. Hoekman also had a solid match, as she recorded nine kills, while Carrie Bairdrecorded seven kills and had a team-best 11 digs. Alvey led the team with 22 assists, while helping steer the San Diego offense to a .231 attack percentage.
In Saturday's loss to Texas, Brown and Hoekman paced the Torero offense with seven kills apiece, while Brown hit for a .357 clip and Hoekman hit for a .176 clip. Alvey recorded a double-double with 19 assists and 10 digs, while Anderson led the team with 11 digs. As a team, USD hit .083, which was a season low for the Toreros.
The Toreros will return to action on Friday as they head up to Long Beach to take on the 49ers of Long Beach State in a 7 p.m. non-conference match.
