Volleyball Jumps to No. 2 in Latest Polls
USD Ranked No. 2 in Latest AVCA top-25.

Sept. 16, 2013

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's volleyball team has again made program history, as they have jumped up seven spots to No. 2 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association top-25 poll, while also receiving 13 first place votes. This marks the highest ranked USD team in any sport in the Division I era, surpassing the No. 4 national ranking the USD baseball team had in 2007.

"We are so thrilled to be recognized by the AVCA voters as to No. 2 team in the country," stated head coach Jennifer Petrie. "This is an exciting time for USD volleyball, and I am so proud of the hard work this team has put in, and how it is paying off."

USD posted a 3-0 record this past week, highlighted by upsetting the, then No.1 ranked team in the nation, USC, on Friday 3-1. USD then posted back-to-back sweeps over Eastern Washington and UC Santa Barbara to claim the championship of the USD Tournament.

In Friday's 3-1 win in front of over 2,000 fans, San Diego's quick offense proved to be too much for the Trojans to handle, as Chloe Ferrari paced the team with 21 kills, while hitting for an impressive .531 clip. Fellow senior middle hitter Katie Hoekman also had a great night, as she recorded 17 kills, while hitting for a .387 clip. Two other Toreros were in double-digit kills, with Sandra Lozic recording 12 kills and Alaysia Brown recording 11 kills. C'era Oliveira recorded 25 digs, while Jianna Bonomi recorded a double-double with 31 assists and 18 digs. As a team, USD hit .236 for the match.

Then in Saturday's 3-0 win over Eastern Washington, Hoekman led all players with 11 kills, while hitting for a .588 clip, and added in three blocks. Hoillins recorded eight kills and had nine digs, while Sandra Lozic recorded seven kills and hit for a .333 clip. Oliveira led the defensive charge, as she had a match-high 15 digs, Bonomi recorded 20 assists and Rachel Alvey recorded 18 assists in helping steer the Torero offense to a season-high .405 attack percentage.

USD then closed the week with a 3-0 win over UCSB, and in this match, Brown led all players with 13 kills on 26 swings, while only committing one error, to hit for a .423 clip. Lozic also had a good offensive match, as she recorded eight kills, while Chloe Ferrari was a perfect six kills on six swings, to hit for a 1.000 clip. Oliveira led the defensive side of things with 14 digs, while Bonomi recorded 21 assists with 12 digs to post another double-double. As a team, USD hit for an impressive .382 clip.

The Toreros return to action on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m., as they take on cross-town rival San Diego State inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
