Toreros Hit the Ground Running

BREA, Calif. --
The USD men's and women's cross-country teams kicked off the 2016 season at the Mark Covert Classic at Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea, Calif. Saturday morning.

Head Coach Will Guarino wasn't concerned with the times of the Toreros in this race. Instead, wanted his runners to focus on pack running. This was especially evident on the women's side, which formed tight running groups and had their top six runners finish together.

"This race was an opportunity to begin the grooming process," Guarino said. "Our focus was similar to a pre-season football game and our focus was engage the team in working together. I wanted the new athletes to understand the Torero way of running cohesively and being united."

Max Pedrotti had the top time for the men's team, finishing the 8k in 26:10.3. Mitch Manis (26:16.2) and freshman Patrick Bruce (26:20.3) finished right behind him.

"I'm really happy with the team effort today," Pedrotti said. "This race showed that we have a lot of potential this season. I was really proud to lead the squad though a historically tough race and I can't wait for the next one."

On the Women's team the A and B packs have never looked stronger. The women were led by the group of veterans: Andrea Hughes, Sam Mattice, Sarah Kapple, Julie Giannini, and Lindsay Benster who all finished with times around 19:19. Freshman Cassidy Kuhn was also in this grouping.

"Our pack is the strongest it has been since I've been here, and this thunderstorm is about to reign," senior captain Lindsay Benster said. "We are all in this to make the girl next to us better. It shows in every workout and will continue to show in every race"

The Toreros' speed will be on full display in two weeks when they host the USD Invite at Mission Bay.
