SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Torero women's cross-country team finished the USD Invite in second place Saturday morning on Mission Bay. Paced by Sam Mattice's second place finish (22:24), Andrea Hughes (5th, 22:31) and Lindsay Benster (7th; 22:37) also earned top ten finishes.

Racing at the site of the WCC Championships (Oct. 28), the Toreros finished ahead of three other WCC schools.

"The women ran lights out," Head Coach Guarino said after the race. "They ran as a pack as they were supposed to. They were aggressive for the 1k and it paid off. Most importantly, they believed in their abilities and therefore they got it done."

Mattice held a lead for the majority of the race, but was overtaken by Cal State Fullerton's Sierra Ungerman down the stretch. As a team, Fullerton took first place on both the men's and women's side.

"Sam ran remarkably well," Guarino said. "She put her heart out there. She was leading until approximately the 5k mark, but she rolled the dice and sometimes you have to do that. I know Sam doesn't fell well about it, but I'm very proud of her."

Max Pedrotti was the top Torero finisher for the men, who came in fourth place overall. Pedrotti finished in 25:49, good for sixth place.

"On the men's side, we have some work to do," Guarino explained. "But nevertheless Max Pedrotti ran very well. Liam Burke (15th; 26:13) is getting stronger, and Mitch Manis (21st; 26:31) and Matthew Smith (30th; 26:54) ran really well.

The Toreros have next week to rest and recover. Their next race will be October 1 at Lehigh University for the Paul Short Invite.
