Toreros’ 14-Hour Trek to Santa Clara Ends In Personal Bests & Broken School Records
Oct. 18, 2015

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Amidst various challenges, the Toreros celebrated an incredible 26 personal records at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational Saturday morning. Just the day before, Interstate Five was shut down due to devastating mudslides. After 14 hours on the bus, the team arrived in Santa Clara at midnight, eagerly anticipating the races that lay just nine hours ahead.

“This was a historic day for USD cross-country on a historic period of time, Head Coach Will Guarino said. “USD had to find a different path to get to the race but nothing could stop them, including the marathon bus drive by Mr. USD himself, John Cunningham.”

In the women’s 6k invitational, Samantha Mattice achieved the new school record and a personal best with a time of 20:23. Andrea Hughes followed close behind in 21:09, attaining a personal best and clocking the third fastest 6k time at USD.

Hughes and Mattice were backed by a strong pack, with Stephanie Lapidus finishing at 21:40 (personal best), Sarah Kapple at 21:41 (personal best), Lindsay Benster at 21:49 (personal best), Sydney Olagaray at 22:05 (personal best), Natalie North-Cole at 22:10 (personal best), Ashley Mitchel at 22:25 (personal best), and Alex Salazar at 22:50 (personal best).

As a whole, this outstanding team of women earned fifth place out of 18 Division I teams, and broke USD’s team 6km record.

The men celebrated similar successes in the 8k invitational. Connor Brandt led with a time of 25:10, earning a personal best and the second fastest 8k time at USD.

Immediately behind him was Liam Burke, running a personal best and the third fastest 8k time at USD in 25:10.5. James Pedrotti followed in 25:16, attaining a personal best and the fifth fastest 8k time at USD.

The strength of the men’ team continued with Matt Smith, finishing in 25:39 (personal best), Matthew Beasley in 25:56, Om Kanwar in 25:59 (personal best), Zach Hinz in 26:14 (personal best), and AJ Sanchez in 27:16.

In the 6k open race, the Torero women earned seven more personal bests and demonstrated the power of the pack. Shannan Conlon finished first for the pack in 23:10 (personal best), followed by Dani LeMieux in 23:12, Olivia Houser in 23:13 (personal best), Allison Lynch in 23:25, and Kelly Peabody in 23:34 (personal best).

Continuing the team’s momentum were Camille Morales in 23:54 (personal best), Olivia Gonzalez in 24:02 (personal best), Erika Brodow in 24:23 (personal best), Shea Ricketts in 24:40 (personal best), and Hannah Talpash in 26:52.

On the men’s side, the 8k open race served as yet another opportunity for broken personal records. Spencer Hoffman finished first for the Toreros in 26:21, followed by Jonathan Drinkward in 26:37 (personal best), Adel Kalifa in 26:50 (personal best), Mitch Mannis in 27:03 (personal best), Eli Rosen-Duran in 27:23 (personal best), and Logan Owens in 28:00.

As the Toreros returned to campus, with I-5 cleared and the voyage coming to a close, new assistant coach, Toya Reavis, reflects on the day’s events. “I’m so proud of how our teams ran today. We brought athletes to run in the invitational and the open, and it was wonderful to see how tough everyone ran and pushed each other to personal bests. It shows what great camaraderie and team effort can do.”
