Cross Country Competes in WCC Championships
Oct. 27, 2017

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Toreros competed in the WCC Cross Country Championships Friday morning, hosted by conference rivals, University of San Francisco. The women had a strong performance, placing 6th out of the teams competing, while men placed 9th.

Head coach Will Guarino commented on the women’s strong performance, “The women gave the ‘Zags a heck of a race. They went out hard as they were supposed to.”

The Toreros held 5th place for the first 5k of the race before barely falling behind Gonzaga. Although they placed 6th, the women were within just 6 points of placing 5th at the Championships. Madison Lambros led the Toreros, placing 30th (21:56.1) on the 6k course.

Liam Burke (25:43.1) and TJ Hodges (25:58.2) set the pace for the Toreros, finishing in quick succession in 50th and 54th place, respectively. However, the men’s team ultimately fell at the championship, placing 9th.

In regard to the men’s performance, Guarino commented on the course, “It is a small field of racing and once you lose the pack, it is hard to make up ground.” This was San Diego’s first time competing on the course at Metropolitan Golf Links, where the Pac-12 held their cross country championships in 2014. The 2k loop course has an elite European feel to it and the privacy of a closed course.

Guarino wanted to specially thank the seniors who made extensive impacts during their time as Toreros. He says, “Thank you to Liam Burke, Zach Hinz, TJ Hodges, Max Pedrotti, and Julie Giannini. It has been an incredible journey and all have made great contributions to the growth of our program.”

Although it wasn’t the Toreros strongest performance, San Diego is already preparing for their next endevour, “Our next race now is geared toward the Western Regionals.”

The WCC Championship Central has access to results, recaps, and the stream.
