MALIBU, Calif. - The USD men's and women's cross country teams put in strong showings at the 2013 West Coast Conference Championships on Saturday morning at Alumni Park in Malibu, Calif. The Torero women finished in 8th place overall (222 Pts.), while the men came in 9th (266). BYU won the WCC title on the men's side, with San Francisco taking their fifth-straight WCC crown.

"The women battled hard and won many of the individual battles, but at the championship level you have to win every single individual battle," said USD Head Coach Will Guarino. "We could not afford to have one of our top five athletes run an average race. I do feel that the women gave their best, but it wasn't equally as a superlative performance as it was two weeks ago when they raced lights out."

Leading the way for the Torero women was senior Gillian Gorelik, who ran the 6k in 22:31, which was good for 29th place overall. Freshman Andrea Hughes (22:55) came in behind Gorelik and took 40th place. Ashton Padberg wasn't too far behind, placing 50th with a time of 23:12.

On the men's side, the Toreros were led by their strong freshman crop as freshman Matthew Beasley set the pace for the Toreros by running the 8k in 25:47, which put him in 44th place overall. Fellow freshman Adam Bodine trailed Beasley and ran a 26:44 that put him in 60th overall. Rounding out USD's top three finishers was freshman Christopher Spinney (27:33), who came in 68th.

"For the men, we knew it was going to be difficult facing two key injuries that plagued us down the stretch," commented Guarino. "Losing Erik Anderson and Malik Hayes was tough for it put the pressure on the dominant freshmen class to carry the load. They simply did not get it done today. The unfortunate injuries came back to bite us today."
