Final lap for many Torero seniors
Nov. 10, 2017

SEATTLE – The men’s and women’s cross country teams finished their season Friday morning at the NCAA West Coast Regionals. With an early hiccup in the women’s race, they were still able to place 23rd out of 36 teams while the men recorded 27th place.

Early in the women’s race, senior Julie Giannini was tripped up by fellow racers, giving her a disadvantage early on. However, she was able to get back on her feet and finish her 6k race in 22:09.6.

“Her drive to race and place was so vital. Nobody was going to deny her the opportunity to race her last senior race,” said head coach, Will Guarino in regards to Giannini’s fall.

Although she was off to a slow start, the women’s team was able to attack this regionals race as a pack.

“The women have been hungry to prove to themselves as to how strong their season has been. Their place versus other teams that they were targeting was reflected in the race,” recalls Guarino.

Leading the pack for the women was freshman, Madison Lambros who placed in the top 100 racers with a time of 21:31.6.

“Madison had a purpose to her, but it truly was a team race,” mentioned Guarino after the race.

The men had a tougher time than the women, placing 27th out of the 30 teams competing.

“The men raced aggressive for the first two miles and placed themselves in a great spot,” commented Guarino.

Senior Liam Burke had the best time for USD on the 8k loop, posting a 31:35.7 and placing an even 100th.

“He had a strong race at the regionals last year, and we are looking forward to him having yet another outstanding finish to his collegiate season,” mentioned head coach, Will Guarino, the week leading up to the regionals.

The Toreros will look forward to the transition into track season this coming spring.
