USD Finishes Top Five at Aztec Invitational

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego cross country team had a great day of racing at the 2010 Aztec Invitational with a women's squad picking up a team high third place in the 5k open event. The other women's squad finished in fourth place in the 5k invite event while the men had a great finish coming in fifth place in the 8k invite event.

"I am extremely pleased with the results of both the Men's Invite, Women's invite, and Women's Open races," said head coach Will Guarino. "We had many outstanding performances on a very a challenging course. The team worked the hills as they were supposed to and also fought hard with the competition."

In the women's 5k open race, the toreros had an average time of 21:21.88 for their squad. They were lead by sophomore Maddie Levine who took 12th place overall in a time of 20:51.3. Alex Clancy placed 18th overall and second for the squad with a time of 21:20.0. Rounding out the top five Torero finishers were Lily Werthan in 21:20 for 20th place, Hana Henson in 21:41 for 25th place, and Laura Wells in 21:47 for 27th place.

In the women's 5k invite race, USD had an average time of of 19:09.68 for fourth place. Sophomore Kristy Koenes paced the team to a ninth place finish overall with a time of 18:37. Gillian Gorelick took a team high second place and finished right behind Koenes for 10th place with a 18:38 mark. Rounding out the top five finishers for USD was Emerald Raney in 19:19 for 30th place, Jessica McCarthy in 19:26 for 34th place, and Samantha Espindola in 19:46 for 44th place.

Rounding out the day was the men's squad competing in the 8k invite race. They finished fifth overall with an average finish time of 26:58.72. Sophomore Erik Anderson paced the team to a 26:09 finish time for ninth place overall. Willie Schefer followed right behind with a 10th place finish in 26:12. Rounding out the top five finishers in the men's race were Chris Flaherty in 27:19 for 29th place, Kyle Carruthers 27:30 in 32nd place, and Cameron Erhardt in 27:42 for 37th place for USD.

"The team raced some outstanding national and regional programs and they held their own on an important benchmark day for us."

San Diego races again in two weeks when they travel to their annual trip which this year will be to South Bend, Indiana for the Notre Dame Invitational to be held on Friday, October 1 at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time.
