SAN DIEGO, Calif.  - The University of San Diego cross country team joined many nationally ranked competitive West Coast programs on Saturday afternoon in the Bronco Cross Country Invitational, hosted by Santa Clara University. The Bronco Invite is noted as the last "fast race" for distance teams as they prepare for their final tune up before heading into their championship season.

The Toreros kicked off competition with the women’s 5k run, led by senior Jenessa Rose (67th) whom delivered an outstanding first race of the season by leading her Torero pack and racing a personal best with a time of 18:21. Rose was closely pushed by Tracy Vargo (67th), and Lauren Rice (70th) whom also equally ran an 18:21 time. Sophomore Gillian Gorelik (74th) and senior Kirsten Allan (76th) followed the Torero pack by running 18:25 and 18:26. Rounding the 6th and 7th spots for the team were where Jessica McCarthy (80th) with a time of 18:30, and Emerald Raney (107th) with a time of 18:47.

"The women’s side executed the best pack running plan that I have ever seen in any of our school races. I am so proud of them for they showed the importance of team racing" said head coach Will Guarino. "The spread between our first and fifth was five seconds and from our first to seventh was 26 seconds. This again shows how selfless they truly are and I loved the way that they encouraged one another to fight as a team. The results speak for themselves as they beat several very competitive conference schools and where able to beat some other schools that they have not beaten in the past." The Torero placed 13th out of 20 teams. They were behind Cal, University of Colorado B team, and John Hopkins University, but ahead of UC Davis, UCLA, and Nevada.

Following the women’s 5k was the men’s 8k run, which was once again led by junior John Cutter (76th) with a time of 25:34.1. Cutter was pushed by teammate freshman Johnathan Garcia (78th) whom set a personal best and a freshmen 8k record with a time of 25:36.1. "We are pleased to see team work on the men's side" said assistant coach Lena Nilsson. "This is a developing year for us for we have several new people running in our Varsity and Johnathan Garcia has stepped up for us and delivered a strong performance for his team."

The Torero runners return to action on Saturday, October 29th, for the West Coast Conference Championship at the last curtain call of the mighty historical Crystal Springs course.
