San Diego, Calif. – The men’s and women’s cross country teams are gearing up for their final race of the season at the NCAA West Regionals this Friday. University of Washington will play host to 40 teams at Jefferson Park Golf Course in Seattle, Wash.
Head coach Will Guarino says, “We are looking forward to going to the Championships this year. It is the toughest region in the country.”
The women’s team is coming off a strong performance at the WCC Championships where they placed 6th, only 6 points behind WCC rival, Gonzaga. They’re hoping to use this momentum to push them to success as they take on 6 nationally ranked teams at this weekend’s regionals. The 6k race will be highlighted by No. 3 Oregon, No. 4 San Francisco, and No. 7 Stanford.
Guarino is excited for the practice the women are going to gain from the race at Regionals. “The women's team is going to the regional championship to gain valuable racing experience. The goals are to continue to push and go head to head with the 30+ teams that will be there.”
The men’s team will be competing in an 8k loop course running against 7 nationally ranked cross country teams. No. 4 Stanford, No. 6 Portland, and No. T10 UCLA will be the teams to beat in Seattle. The Toreros will be led by predominately seniors – specifically, Liam Burke.
Says Guarino, “Burke had a strong race at the regionals last year, and we are looking forward to him having yet another outstanding finish to his collegiate season.”
For the young women’s team, the Toreros are using the NCAA West Regionals as a chance to develop their championship racing abilities to carry on into next season, while the older men’s team is embracing their final collegiate cross country appearance.
