Toreros Score Eight in the Second to Top Seattle 8-7

Michelle Delgado caps a chaotic eight-run frame with a two-run home run as San Diego takes series over Seattle

SAN DIEGO — San Diego softball (20-30, 6-11 WCC) sent 11 batters to the plate in a chaotic eight-run second inning and held on to defeat Seattle U (19-31, 5-12 WCC) by an 8-7 margin on Friday afternoon at Reggie Smith Softball Complex, taking the series against the Redhawks with one game left to play in 2026.

The Toreros trailed 1-0 after the first before erupting in the second — a frame that saw all eight runs score without an earned run. Shawnese Hogue-Lacy walked and Hailey Mulligan was hit by a pitch to put two on, and Natalie McCliman reached on a fielder's choice that moved Hogue-Lacy to third on a Seattle U error. Carly Ruiz then singled home the first run, Kaitlyn Wynia reached on a second error to score another, and Mallory Axline drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a third. Taylor Johnson followed with a two-run single to right, Kaylee Oh added an RBI sacrifice fly, and Michelle Delgado capped the outburst with a two-run home run to left center — her fourth of the season — to make it 8-1 after two innings.

Seattle U chipped away throughout, pulling within one after a three-run fifth, but Charlie Johnson came on in relief and was dominant to close it out — retiring the last six batters she faced over the final 2.0 innings while striking out two. Kaitlyn Bartlow started in the circle and earned the win, with Alex Riggs following before Johnson sealed the victory.

The Toreros will be back in action tomorrow for their final home game of the 2026 season. First pitch for senior day at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex against Seattle U is set for 12:00 p.m.
