Toreros Strike for Seven in the First, Hold Off Seattle U 7-6

Bartlow closes it out with four strikeouts across two innings as San Diego opens Senior Day weekend with a win

SAN DIEGO — In a fitting start to Senior Day weekend, San Diego softball (19-30, 5-11 WCC) sent 12 batters to the plate in the first inning and never looked back, scoring all seven of its runs in the opening frame to hold off Seattle U (19-30, 5-11 WCC) by a 7-6 margin on Thursday evening at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex — with the complex's namesake, Reggie Smith, on hand to throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

The Toreros wasted no time Thursday, stringing together five consecutive extra-base hits in the first inning to take a commanding lead. Michelle Delgado got things started with a two-run double to left center to score Mallory Axline and Kaylee Oh, Shawnese Hogue-Lacy followed with an RBI double to right center, and Hailey Mulligan kept the line moving with another RBI double to left center. Janae Combs put an exclamation point on the inning with a two-run home run to deep left field to make it 6-0, before Carly Ruiz tripled and scored on a Kaitlyn Wynia RBI single to cap the seven-run frame.

Seattle U chipped away throughout, scoring two in the second on a two-run double and three more in the fifth on a two-run single and an unearned run, pulling within two. But Kaitlyn Bartlow came on in relief in the sixth and was dominant, striking out four batters over two innings and allowing just one unearned run in the seventh to earn her third save of the season. Charlie Johnson started in the circle and threw the opening five frames and earned the win.Ā

The Toreros will be back in action tomorrow to continue their series with Seattle U at home, with game two at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
